Albert Einstein is quoted as stating: “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”
In the Back to the Future series, “Doc” Emmett Brown used a device called Mr. Fusion. This device was a reactor that converted household waste (i.e. garbage) into useful energy to power the DeLorean time machine. In our day and age, there are vehicles that are powered by renewable biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel can be made from waste vegetable oil, used cooking oil, used fryer grease, etc. That which originated as an abstract idea in the imagination of the movie creator (using waste products to power a vehicle) has now become a tangible reality.
I’m sure you can think of many more examples where someone’s imagination turned out to be a preview of life’s coming attractions. However, why am I even bringing up this topic to begin with?
There are many systems and programs out there that claim that you’ll produce your first million just by using a premade website that they provide to you. What’s the problem with this? If 1,000+ people are using the same “cookie cutter” website to promote the same product with the same information, there is no true product differentiation. There are a bunch of clone websites all over the place, and you’re basically competing with fellow program members. The market becomes oversaturated. How can you expect to have measurable success in such an environment?
In order to be different and stand apart from the mainstream, you must be creative and unleash the power of your imagination. In a sense, you have to brand yourself. As was implied above, it’s impossible to brand yourself when you use the same promotional materials as everyone else.
When you hear “We Like to Party” by the Vengaboys or see an old man in a tuxedo dancing/getting his groove on, what does it remind you of?
Six Flags, no doubt. These mascots and images are what stand out in our mind. You must apply the same principle and make yourself and/or the product memorable to your intended audience.
Being creative filters down into all aspects of your life … not just advertising and marketing. Be creative in the ways you manage and grow your money - of course, make sure you’re doing things legally and sensibly.
Others have invented brilliant products from relatively simple ideas … think of velcro, Scotch tape (these are inventions that still stick with us today, pun intended), light bulbs, condoms … well, you get the idea.
Have fun, and let your imagination run wild. You may just have the next important idea that can change the way the world lives, does business, and so much more. In the process, you can even make a mint off of your ideas. If you merge forces with Willy Wonka, you might even be able to operate a mint chocolate factory (corny joke, I know).
Ken Robinson gave an interesting discourse about education and creativity and how it affects society. Please feel free to check out that video below. On a final note (and since I mentioned Willy Wonka), here is a song entitled “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
